College Career Fairs: Maximizing the Employer Experience
College career fairs present the perfect opportunity to both attract and educate potential candidates. Fairs are set up to enable recruiters to present their companies while making quick judgments based on important first impressions. In the long run, it may be these first impressions that aid in filling your company’s open positions. Consider the following pointers to ensure that your company gets the most out of its next career fair.
Decide on Set-Up. Some companies may have more than one booth layout for special events. Be sure to determine the appropriate layout for your booth beforehand. An eye-catching display may be the key to attracting potential candidates. Having materials packed and ready is also a good idea. Be sure to acquire any help that you may need to set up in order to avoid any setbacks from occurring before start time.
Know Your Goal. Take the time to familiarize your team with the open positions that your company is actively trying to fill. Career fairs tend to attract a diverse crowd, and just about anyone can walk up to your booth. Prepare a sheet of key talking points that you’d like your team to discuss with potential candidates. This allows for easier communication and have your team on the same page.
Pack Promotional Materials. Be sure to bring along promotional materials that attendees may take with them. These may be in the form of pamphlets, booklets, or even a simple handout. This not only spreads the word about your company, but also allows potential candidates to become familiar with your company and corporate culture.
Do Your Homework. If the career fair is taking place at an educational institution, it is wise to prepare a list of majors, minors, and any other academic requirements that your company is seeking. Specify if you’re hiring for full-time/part-time, co-op, or internship positions. Also, if possible, ensure that any employees who are alumni of that institution attend the fair. This is a great opportunity for them to discuss their transition from college life to finding their place in the company, which can be a great selling point.
